The Freelance editor that Carina UK employ to edit crime novels returned his verdict today.
Overall, a lot better than I feared!
This editor is the first "professional" to read the entire manuscript for my first DCI Warren Jones novel. I've had invaluable, generous, critical feedback from lots of friends, many of whom have given me really helpful advice or spotted errors that I've made, however, this is the first person from the publishing industry to give their advice.
He was generous with his praise saying that he enjoyed it and that he would like to edit the rest in the series.
In terms of the changes he recommends, these are not too onerous:
A few logical inconsistencies, such as a character knowing something before they were told it - a consequence of my haphazard, non-linear writing habit, no doubt.
Some suggestions about where things could be trimmed.
A couple of errors, here and there that I didn't spot during the previous nine drafts...
All-in-all, I'm rather pleased.
In a perfect world, I'd get on with the edits immediately, however we're having Area Review at school and I don't have the time, so Carina have agreed to wait until I can give them my full attention.
It's all getting exciting now...
